Karnišovas started his basketball journey in Lithuania, where he played for Statyba Vilnius while still in high school. Notably, his father Mykolas also played for the same team, making them a unique father-son duo in Statyba history. Karnišovas had a desire to play and study in the United States, and his talent caught the attention of Seton Hall University.
Thanks to a recommendation from Šarūnas Marčiulionis to Seton Hall head coach P.J. Carlesimo during the 1990 FIBA World Championship, Karnišovas was invited to the Seton Hall Pirates.
Although he could not speak English at the time, he became the first player from the USSR to play college basketball in the United States. Karnišovas had a successful collegiate career, playing four years and contributing to the team’s two Big East Tournament victories and consistent NCAA Tournament qualification.
After college, Karnišovas pursued his dream of playing in the NBA, but faced challenges securing a spot on the team. He decided to continue his basketball career overseas and played in several top European national leagues, including Spain, Italy, Greece and France.
Karnišovas achieved notable performances during his time in Europe, such as reaching the EuroLeague Final Four three times and leading the EuroLeague in free throw percentage in the 1998–99 season. His outstanding performances earned him recognition as the FIBA European Player of the Year in 1996.
