Who is Gianni Infantino?

Gianni Infantino is a famous Swiss-Italian football administrator and is known for being the current president of FIFA. He has been in the news for recently criticizing the Western media for discriminating against the World Cup in Qatar.

His full name is Giovanni Vincenzo Infantino. He was born in Brig, Switzerland on March 23, 1970. His parents are Italian immigrants from Lombardy and Calabria. He has both Swiss and Italian citizenship.

Gianni Infantino studied law at the University of Fribourg. He speaks English, Portuguese, Arabic, Italian, Spanish, French and German fluently. He was married to Leena Al Ashqar, a Lebanese woman. They have four children together.

He is currently 52 years old.

 

His career

In August 2000, Gianni Infantino started working for UEFA. Four years later, he was appointed Director of UEFA’s Legal Affairs and Club Licensing Division. In 2007 he was appointed Deputy Secretary General of UEFA and in 2009 Secretary General of the organization.

During the 2016 FIFA Extraordinary Congress held in February 2016, he was selected to serve as FIFA President. In June 2019, he was re-elected to serve as FIFA President. In January 2020, he was selected as a member of the International Olympic Committee.
