He was born at the Mogadishu, Somalia, on October 4, 1982, and spent his first years in Baidoa, Somalia. She was the youngest of seven siblings, including her sister Sahra Noor.

Her father, Nur Omar Mohamed, a Somali from the Majeerteen family in northeastern Somalia, was a Colonel of the Somali army under Siad Barre and served as a teacher trainer.
Ilhan’s mother, Fadhuma Abukar Haji Hussein, from Benadiri (a Yemeni community), died when Ilhan was two years old.
She was raised by her father Nur and grandfather, who were moderate Sunni Muslims who opposed the strict Wahhabi interpretation of Islam.
Ilhan’s grandfather Abukar was the director of the Somali National Marine Transport, and some of Omar’s uncles and aunts also worked as government employees and teachers.
Sh and her family fled Somalia to escape the Somali Civil War and spent four years in the Dadaab refugee camp in Garissa Oblast, Kenya, near the Somali border.
