Gurunanak Jayanti

Guru Nanak Dev or Nanak Dev was the first Guru of Sikhs. Guru Nanak Devji was born on 15 April 1469 AD (Vaishakh Sudi 3, Samvat 1526 Vikrami) in a place called Talwandi Raibhoy.

For convenience, Prakash Utsav of Guru Nanak is celebrated in Kartik Purnima. Talwandi is now known as the Nankana Sahib. Talwandi is located 30 miles southwest of the Lahore region of Pakistan. (Gurunanak Jayanti)

In 1485 AD, Nanak married Sulakkhani, Moola’s daughter, a resident of Batala. Very little is known about his marital status.

At the age of 28, his eldest son, Shichand, was born. At the age of 31, his second son, Laxmidas, or Lakshmichand, was born. Guru Nanak’s father tried to get him involved in agriculture, business etc.

In November, 1504 AD, his brother-in-law Jayaram (husband of his older sister Nanaki) summoned Guru Nanak from Sultanpur with him. He lived in Sultanpur from November 1504 to October 1507.

Through the efforts of his brother-in-law Jairam, he was kept in the house of Daulat Khan, governor of Sultanpur. He finished his work with great honesty.

He used to give a large portion of his income to the poor and the sadhus. Sometimes they spent the whole night singing to God.

Mardana had come here from Talwandi and became a servant of Guru Nanak and stayed with him until the end.

Spiritual Call and Sacrifice Service

Rai Buller first understood Guru Nanak’s divinity and, happy with him, kept Nanak in school. Nakan’s guru was amazed to hear his poetic spiritual songs.

When the time came for Nanak to perform a Hindu ritual, he refused to participate in it.

4. Money should keep in the pocket. He should not be allowed to make room in his heart.

5. Respect should be given to the women’s category. He looked at all men and women equally.

6. To stay free from stress, one must continue to do one’s work continuously and should remain happy.

7. Before conquering the world, it is very important to overcome bad personal habits.

8. The Ego does not allow a person to remain human, so the ego should never be made, but should be humbled and live a life of service.

9. Guru Nanak Dev viewed the whole world as one home while the people living on earth were part of the family.

10. The message of love, unity, equality, brotherhood and spiritual light must be given to the people.
